Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival
A modern revival (2018) of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign, led by Rev. William Barber II and Rev. Liz Theoharis, uniting tens of thousands to challenge systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation.
Volunteers, often through their state PPC committees, mobilize their communities for Mass Moral Mondays (peaceful civil disobedience actions at state capitols and DC), register and protect low-income voters, and organize “Poor People’s Hearings” where directly impacted folks testify about injustices. Many are people of faith who use their moral voice – clergy and laypeople alike volunteer to get arrested in nonviolent protests for Medicaid expansion, living wages, and voting rights as part of this fusion movement
