National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA)
The leading voice for dignity and rights of the 2.2 million domestic workers in the U.S. (nannies, home care aides, house cleaners), most of whom are women of color and immigrants, founded in 2007 by Ai-jen Poo.
Volunteers (including domestic workers themselves and allies) engage in NDWA campaigns such as pushing states to pass a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights – activities include gathering petition signatures from local household employers, testifying to lawmakers about the need for labor protections, and helping host Domestic Worker Appreciation events. Tech-savvy volunteers might contribute to NDWA Labs projects (like the “Alia” benefits platform), and others can support the relief funds and mutual aid circles NDWA runs (especially during crises like COVID-19 when domestic workers lost jobs).
