About / Mission
Black Moon Wild Canid Sanctuary is a trauma-informed, ecocentric 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing lifelong sanctuary to wolfdogs, New Guinea Singing Dogs, foxes, coyotes, and other displaced wild canids. Based in Eden, the sanctuary combines rescue, education, advocacy, and ecological stewardship to promote coexistence with predators and restore compassionate relationships between humans, wildlife, and the land.
Founded by trauma-informed advocate, educator, and sanctuary director Mētztli Wolf, Black Moon centers decolonial, anti-exploitative, and compassionate care practices that recognize wild canids as vital ecological kin rather than commodities or threats. The sanctuary provides permanent refuge for animals facing euthanasia, neglect, abandonment, breeder surrender, or displacement, while also educating the public about predator conservation, ethical wildlife stewardship, and the realities of wolfdog care.
In addition to animal rescue, Black Moon works to restore damaged land, expand safe naturalistic habitats, advocate for misunderstood predators, and inspire cultural shifts toward coexistence, ecological responsibility, and collective care.
Volunteer Needs
Volunteer Support Projects at Black Moon Wild Canid Sanctuary
Animal Care & Habitat Support
Volunteers assist with the daily care and enrichment of rescued wolfdogs and other wild canids through habitat cleaning, feeding preparation, enrichment setup, water station maintenance, fencing checks, and seasonal shelter improvements. Support helps maintain safe, clean, stimulating, and species-appropriate environments for sanctuary residents.
Habitat Restoration & Land Stewardship
Black Moon incorporates ecological restoration into sanctuary operations. Volunteers may help with native planting projects, erosion control, pollinator gardens, invasive species removal, trail maintenance, regenerative landscaping, and creating environmentally sustainable habitat spaces that support both resident animals and local ecosystems.
Sanctuary Construction & Infrastructure
As the sanctuary expands, volunteers can assist with building and repair projects including fencing installation, enclosure expansion, shade structures, winterization efforts, drainage systems, storage organization, and other infrastructure improvements necessary for long-term animal welfare and safety.
Education & Public Awareness
Volunteers support educational outreach by helping create informational materials, assisting with events, moderating online spaces, supporting advocacy campaigns, photographing sanctuary residents, editing videos, and helping share accurate information about wolfdogs, predators, conservation, and ethical rescue practices.
Fundraising & Community Support
Community volunteers help organize donation drives, sponsorship campaigns, auctions, grant preparation assistance, merchandise fulfillment, event planning, vendor booths, and mutual-aid-centered fundraising initiatives that directly support animal care and sanctuary sustainability.
Administrative & Creative Support
Remote and local volunteers may assist with graphic design, social media management, newsletter writing, website updates, bookkeeping assistance, data organization, photography, videography, and storytelling projects that amplify the sanctuary’s mission and educational impact.
Emergency & Seasonal Preparedness
Volunteers are especially valuable during seasonal transitions and emergencies, assisting with storm preparation, heat mitigation efforts, firewood stacking, winter shelter setup, emergency supply organization, transportation assistance, and disaster preparedness planning for sanctuary residents.
Advocacy & Conservation Initiatives
Black Moon also welcomes volunteers interested in predator advocacy, ethical wildlife education, anti-harassment initiatives within rescue spaces, decolonizing animal welfare conversations, and promoting compassionate coexistence with misunderstood species.
